The ending of Attack on Titan divided fans around the world. After years following Eren Yeager’s journey, the finale brought answers — but also raised an even more important question: Did Eren’s plan actually make sense, or was it all just one great inevitable tragedy?
What Exactly Was Eren's Plan?
Many people summarize Eren Yeager’s plan as “destroy the world.” But the truth is far more complex. Eren initiates the Rumbling — unleashing the Wall Titans — to prevent the rest of the world from attacking Paradis Island. He sacrifices his own image and accepts the role of villain so that his friends can be seen as heroes, and so the people of Paradis have a fighting chance to continue existing. Eren wanted to rewrite how the world perceived his people, consciously assuming the role of monster.
The Fate Factor: Did Eren Really Have a Choice?
Eren had already seen the future. Through the power of the Attack Titan combined with the Founding Titan, he could perceive memories scattered across time. If the future is truly fixed, his actions become a form of tragic resignation rather than a choice. The anime never gave a definitive answer on how much Eren could or could not change events — and that moral discomfort is precisely what keeps the story alive.
Did the Rumbling Work?
In the short term, Eren’s plan achieved several objectives: Paradis is no longer on the brink of immediate annihilation, and his friends are positioned as heroes who saved what remained of humanity. But the epilogue reveals that new wars eventually emerge and the cycle of violence restarts. Eren delayed destruction at the cost of the unimaginable.
Did Eren Actually Want to Be Stopped?
Eren exposes himself, hesitates, and prepares the path for his friends to reach him. He admitted he tried to see other endings, and they were all bad. During the final battle, Eren does not use his full potential — he allows Mikasa, Armin, and the others to advance. By dying, he ends the era of the Titans.
The True Meaning of the Attack on Titan Ending
The ending leaves you trapped with a character who crosses every possible moral line. The story suggests that the pursuit of freedom can easily slip into destruction. Perhaps the most interesting question the show leaves behind is this: If you were in Eren’s place… what would you do?
