The Theory That Explains Why Mario Never Ages
CURIOSIDADES NERDGAMES
Since his first appearance in the 1980s, Mario has remained exactly the same: same mustache, same look, always with the same energy to save the Mushroom Kingdom. While other franchises age their characters or reboot their stories, Mario remains trapped in a curious state of eternal youth. That raises an intriguing question:
Why does Mario never age?
Mario's First Appearance
Mario debuted in 1981 in the game Donkey Kong, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. Back then he was still called Jumpman, a carpenter who needed to rescue Pauline from a giant gorilla. He later became a plumber… and even after more than 40 years, something curious remains: Mario still appears to be around 24 to 25 years old.
The Frozen Timeline Theory
The Mario games do not represent chronological events happening over decades. Instead, each game would be a new adventure taking place within the same period of the character’s life. In other words: Mario does not age because all the games take place within the same phase of his life. Something similar happens with The Simpsons, Ash from Pokémon, and the Zelda franchise — time practically does not pass.
Nintendo’s Comment
Shigeru Miyamoto has commented that Mario was designed to represent energy and adventurous spirit. In other words, he was created to be timeless.
The "Character Theater" Theory
The Mario games work like theatrical plays. Mario would be an actor, Bowser too, Peach part of the cast. Each game would be a new play with the same characters. This explains enemies becoming allies, sports together (Mario Kart, Tennis), and Bowser appearing at parties (Mario Party).
Official Age
According to official Nintendo materials, Mario is approximately 24 or 25 years old. In practice, he is timeless.
Conclusion
The frozen timeline theory helps explain why Mario never ages. But deep down… Mario does not need to age. He was created to be an eternal character, capable of transcending generations.
